LUNCH with KEYNOTE SPEAKER: Todd Park, US CTO (intro by Skip Rung)*
States are increasingly embracing technology-based economic development (TBED) as awareness of the severity of the global competitiveness challenge and competition for high quality jobs sinks in. Skip Rung will provide an overview of the highly successful Oregon Innovation Council model for "Signature Research Centers", including ONAMI, which just received the SSTI 2012 Excellence in TBED award for Commercializing Research. Best practices will be discussed, including how measurement and reporting of economically relevant metrics, combined with compelling stories, is essential for sustaining public support. The ONAMI process and results for commercialization will be reviewed, demonstrating how pre-SBIR gap funds help companies cross the dual (technology maturity, market orientation) "valley of death" and lead to higher quality SBIR and STTR proposals. A concept for federal-state partnerships in gap funding will be proposed.
